Since 2000 Dr Ross’s research has been integrated with Faculty of Medicine through close collaborations and grant submissions with Cross, further grant submissions with Stevenson and she has also worked with Sahota. Dr Ross was head of the LLR UK Myeloma Forum Cytogenetic Database from October 2000 to October 2010 investigating the significance of genetic abnormalities in myeloma, particularly in the MRC Myeloma IX trial, a large national study. In association with local haematologists she investigated the possibility of detecting abnormalities that predict for progression from the prodromal monoclonal gammopathy of undetermined significance or asymptomatic myeloma stages. This has led to myeloma clinical guidelines published this year recommending that certain FISH abnormalities are looked for in all myeloma patients as they have significant prognostic value. Analyses arising from the trial are not yet complete and publications are ongoing. Dr Ross’s group continues to be a reference centre for UK myeloma FISH. Dr Ross is also Head of Oncology at the Wessex Regional Genetics laboratory. In this role she has been able to provide material for collaborative studies both locally, nationally and internationally. Dr Ross will retire in April 2014.
