Additional information

The book traces a genealogy of the idea of the “lesser evil,” from classical ethics and Christian theology to contemporary debates on humanitarianism. It examines it through a set of spatial investigations of sites of conflict: the relief centres set up by MSF during its 1980s intervention in Ethiopia; the building of the separation wall in Israel–Palestine; and developments in the application of international human rights law in Bosnia, Palestine and Iraq.
