River Flower
The output is consequent upon the findings from a programme of experimentation since 2010, comprising new research within the emergent field of cymatics (the science of waveforms), natural forms, processes and the visualization of sound. It is a video installation resembling an endlessly unfolding flower derived from asymmetrically vibrating grains of salt subjected to digital geometric manipulations. Where previous inquiry has concerned single tonal harmonic symmetry, in 2010 Hyatt built bespoke asymmetrical cymatic devices for a series of experiments examining the action of variable frequency oscillation on various materials on non-rigid surfaces. This research programme and its findings include observations on pattern forms; systems; feedback loops; synchronization; patterns of turbulence; biomimesis; the organisation of variety; beauty; aesthetics and the Golden Section. Findings have been presented internationally within conference presentations (UK; India; Portugal; and Taiwan) and, by invitation of the RSA and Culture NW, as a talk to the organizers of Manchester Science Festival, 2011. This research has also led to exhibited digital print works (International Print Triennial, Krakow, 2012) and widely exhibited rapid prototype sculpture (e.g. Eye Hand & Mind, WE-ASC World Education Cultural Congress, New Delhi, India. 2013). Field investigations into stone-carved and traditional Indian woven textiles pattern led to the presentation of new research in 2010 at Arts Reverie, Ahmedabad where it was adopted as the rationale for the theme of ‘Beauty’ for the first Ahmedabad International Arts Festival 2010 (23 Arts events) and ‘Pattern’ for 2011 (35 events at 23 different venues). Inspired by this research, multi-disciplinary investigative projects on Pattern were pursued throughout every event and educational projects in schools/colleges. The output was projected, by civic dispensation, onto the founding stone of Ahmedabad, India, to mark its 600th birthday as a part of the AIAF2010. Hyatt continues to support AIAF in its thematic underpinning.
