Additional information

This paper resulted from a collaboration between Imperial College and Rolls-Royce plc.  Laffan was a Rolls-Royce sponsored CASE student, and McMillan was at the time of the research, an employee of Rolls-Royce and responsible for coordinating research and technology acquisition, particularly regarding strength of composite materials.  Pinho and Robinson were established research active staff at  Imperial College.  This paper will have direct impact in enhancing the understanding of failure of composites within and between laminae, and as a result of different crack notch geometries.  This will improve the prediction capability of current analysis techniques, particularly for composite materials under impact load.
