Additional information

This paper resulted from a collaboration between University of Oxford and Rolls-Royce plc.  Minisgallo was a student on a Rolls-Royce funded internship at Oxford, and McMillan was at the time of the research, an employee of Rolls-Royce and responsible for coordinating research and technology acquisition, particularly regarding strength of composite materials.  Petrinic and Tagarielli were at that time established research active staff at Oxford University. This paper would have direct impact in enhancing the understanding of failure of composites in the through-thickness direction, thereby improving the prediction capability of current analysis techniques, particularly for composite materials under impact load
