Additional information

Electrical insulators on high voltage power lines have historically been made from ceramic materials. While they are extensively used there are issues in the installation because of their weight hence moving them on to high voltage lines is not a straightforward task. They are also brittle which can result in catastrophic failure. The paper reports the effect of a fairly severe environment on a comparatively new type of overhead line insulator. The degradation was dependent on the direction of the prevailing weather conditions and also showed that the presence of organic species on the surface helped to protect the insulator
