Additional information

CNC polishing is widely considered a modern competitor to traditional methods. This paper demonstrates the power of combining the two in a novel way. The Precessions process is interchanged with a classical pitch tool, both running on the same CNC platform under software control, giving demonstrated performance in terms of mid spatial frequencies better than either alone. This approach is described in the context of mirror segments, but has been applied to several other industrial applications, such as polishing x-ray shells and mandrels, and moulds and dies.
