New Music for a New Oboe, volume 1
An AHRC follow-on grant allowed the commissioning of new works for the Howarth-Redgate oboe from Edwin Roxburgh, Michael Finnissy, Brian Ferneyhough, Richard Barrett, and Sam Hayden. The first performances and recordings of the first two pieces are submitted as a single research output.
Edwin Roxburgh: The Well Tempered Oboe for Howarth-Redgate oboe and piano. First performed by Christopher Redgate and Stephen Robbings (piano), Royal Academy of Music, 2 November 2011.
Michael Finnissy: Âwâz-e Niyâz for Howarth-Redgate oboe doubling lupophon and piano. First complete performance by Christopher Redgate and Michael Finnissy (piano), Chancellor’s Hall, Senate House, University of London, 7 December 2012.
Both pieces recorded on New Music for a New Oboe, Vol. 1 (Metier, 2013).
The preparation for both of these pieces involved further development and refinement of the mutiphonic and microtonal fingerings on the new instrument that led to a redesign of the multiphonic key and the release of the 2nd version of the instrument by Howarth of London.
