Bodies in Motion seeks to interrogate the fusion of live, interactive and pre-programmed performance parameters in a series of three performance iterations based upon different core materials and variations in performance content, but the same artistic framework.

Each of the works were devised and directed by Dr.Osbon, but the creative content was external. Each performance event was live and webcast simultaneously from Grand Valley (USA) London (UK) and The Hague (Netherlands).

Bodies in Motion sought to present a performance landscape in which linear and non-linear performance confronts wider perceptions of practice and perception in the performing arts. The question addressed was: How can such mixed-media performances engage with the boundaries of live performance, and whether an enhanced ‘space’ becomes available to creative and performing artists through performer/audience interaction in a multi-platform environment.

The performance environment created for Bodies in Motion challenged the assumed differences between live and mediatised performance and created an environment whereby the boundaries ceased to be significant.

Bodies in Motion, through the incorporation of more and more non-linear parameters, has sought to fuse the ‘live’ and ‘mediatised’ into a single creative and performative experience. Performers are, at one time, both present and absent, they are both presenting and interacting, in a mixture of performance media and presentation platforms.

If such a space is to exist then can engagement become ‘transmedial’ i.e. exist across platforms and, if so, what are the implications for the analytical framework for mixed-media performance?
