Additional information

Showed that the enzyme eNOS plays an important role in intraocular pressure (IOP) regulation; dysregulation of IOP is the primary risk factor for glaucoma, the second most common cause of blindness. Further, proposed a novel fundamental mechanism for IOP regulation which was the basis for NIH grant 5R01EY022359 ($1.3M) designed to develop new drugs to exploit this mechanism for glaucoma treatment. Won the $50,000 2012 Lewis Rudin Prize of the New York Academy of Medicine (www.nyam.org/grants/rudin-glaucoma.html) for "the most outstanding scholarly article on glaucoma published in a peer-reviewed journal during the previous calendar year”. Stamer was an international sabbatical visitor.
