Double-weighted statement

This work represents the culmination of over forty years’ research. It deals with one of the most contentious periods in Irish and British history, which has been the subject of more popular than academic interest, and covers a timespan aimed to elide the traditional tendency to treat the war of independence and the civil war separately. The research for this book, supported by the award of a Leverhulme Fellowship, and a British Academy grant to enable the preparation of a large-scale archival database by a research assistant, makes possible a large-scale analysis of this intensely disputed period.
