The company was established in 2003 and carries out research and development, with funding provided by its parent company San-Ei Gen FFI. Research has been in the field of food hydrocolloids and has centred on their physical modification to provide specific functionalities which can be applied to develop new food products. Since its inception the company’s principal research base has been located in Glyndwr University. The company has provided funding for equipment, staff and students to undertake specific research projects. The work has been published in well-established journals and where appropriate patent protection sought for the methods and products developed. As Chairman of the Company and a Visiting Professor at the University my role has been to identify the main areas of interest and participate in the research on a collaborative basis. The work was initially fundamental to establish structure-function relationships for a range of natural hydrocolloids. On this foundation the materials could be physically modified to improve their functional performance, for example, for the emulsification of complex beverage systems. Throughout, the changes were of a nature that did not prejudice the regulatory status of the food additives or ingredients. The research work and funding support continues.
