The Influence of Through-The-Thickness Binder Yarn Count on Fibre Volume Fraction, Crimp and Damage Tolerance Within 3D Woven Carbon Fibre Composites
The binder yarns directly affect the interlaminar shear and have the ability to increase toughness and resistance to delaminating. The paper strongly contributes to the knowledge of the links between textile design and engineering performance bridging the gap between a largely artistic craft such as weaving and the rigorous requirement of an engineering material. The conclusion here can be directly fed into design and production thinking for advanced 3D textiles. Work related to this has been funded under the INI-£100k–POC and has led to a Spin-Out company from Ulster, Axis Composites Ltd.
