Additional information

The paper represents an in-depth study of the characteristics of silicon nanocrystals (SiNCs) exposed to liquid environments and establishes the scientific basis for microplasma-induced non-equilibrium liquid chemistry. It results from collaboration with National Institute of Advanced Industrial Science and Technology (AIST), Japan and Tyndall National Institute, Ireland and was supported by a Japan Society for Promotion of Science Invitation Fellowship and by a Science Foundation Ireland grant (Award n.283). The work underpins our recent successful EPSRC proposals in solar cells (EP/K022237/1) and microplasma – bacteria interactions (EP/K006088/1)
