The paper provides strong evidence that transients in the shape of the molten pool and mushy zone, and not only the steady state values, are important for understanding freckle features during industrial production of nickel-base superalloys. The work resulted in the award of a substantial grant from Precision Castparts Corp (VP Technology at PCC Forged Products, PCC USA, Aug 2010-July 2013).
