Additional information

This paper won the ASME Best Paper award (Aircraft Engine Committee) 2009. The research produced the first in-engine traverse system used to study a turbine system during engine operation. The measurements were performed in a Trent 900 engine. The systems were used to measure turbine performance at full engine operating temperatures and pressures experienced in the high pressure and intermediate pressure turbines. The value of this research programme was £1.4M. The system survived several days of trials for 8 hours a day. This was the first paper to report such measurements from a full engine test.
