Additional information

The paper explores the impact of flow blockage and free surface deformation on the performance and wake losses of a marine turbine, and has supported understanding in further work related to the performance of high solidity tidal turbine fences. By emphasising the role of blockage, this research is leading to a re-evaluation of how best to deploy tidal turbines. The paper was one of 13 selected for publication in Phil. Trans. Roy. Soc. in a special issue drawn from the 226 papers presented at the biennial European Wave and Tidal Energy Conference (2011), the main technical conference in marine energy.
