Additional information
A previously existing ballistic impact method was further developed and applied to silk fibres in order to understand their high rate behaviour. The method has been developed to also investigate the aerodynamic behaviour of fibres and webs. This has led to new research on energy absorption and dissipation in silk structures and the biological evolution of multi-functional silks (e.g. for signalling as well as prey capture). In addition, it has led to further research on the nature of wave propagation in pre-loaded fibres, with the Department of Zoology, Oxford.
