Additional information

Traditional pressure bandages used for treatment of Venus leg ulcers use up to 4 layers of bandaging to achieve gradient pressure between the ankle and knee, often leading to other complications due to excessive pressure on the tibia. SMPU strip actuators have been for the first time used to assess feasibility of such systems in achieving gradient pressure without causing further complications and being easy to apply. Based on this novel idea a patent has been applied for (GB2470185 (A)). This work also formed part of the PhD thesis of Ahmad (2012, Supervisor Miraftab).
