Additional information

Post fire mechanical performance of structural composites is an important issue. This work led by Kandola has shown that though nanoparticles help in char formation in thermoset resins, the formed char lacks mechanical coherence. The findings led to the idea of depositing nanoparticles on the surface of the composite laminate so that they can act as ceramicizing elements, providing a thermal barrier to the underlying structure. The work carried out by another PhD student has recently been submitted to Applied Clay Science. This also resulted in related funding for a PhD student by Chemtura (USA).
