The pioneering theoretical work guided the first experimental breakthrough in remarkable reduction of the band gap of TiO2, enabling various photon-induced functionalities under visible and infrared light, while virgin material only functions under ultraviolet light (UV< 5% of solar irradiance). This also opens a new avenue for the development of sustainable solar cells using the cheap TiO2 material which is environmentally friendly and is of large resources. The work laid basis for >40 journal papers with overall 224 citations.
