The influences of biaxial/uniaxial strain on the ultraviolet emission efficiencies of both c/m plane AlxGa1-xN films, with varying Al concentrations, are investigated with k.p perturbation theory. Optimal high efficiency windows, for ultraviolet light emissions are discerned. Edwards pursued a research collaboration with the Department of Physics, Nanjing University, China, providing the lead in bandstructure theoretical expertise and directed the software development for calculating the optical properties of wide bandgap semiconductors. This work has contributed to the scientific understanding that has allowed Sensor Electronic Technology to develop UV LEDs for water purification.
