Double-weighted statement

This 232-page book required extensive use of archives in four countries – the UK, the US, Sierra Leone and Liberia – with the Sierra Leone and Liberia archives presenting a particular challenge in terms of access. The research in these archives took place not long after the ending of each country’s civil war, and thus the archives were in a state of disorder. In Liberia, it took three weeks to even find out which government building was now housing the remaining archives from the nineteenth century. In Sierra Leone, materials were haphazardly packed in boxes.
