HEAD OVER HEELS aka YOURS TRULY.
Building on Yours Truly (2007) my imperative with Yours Truly AKA Head Over Heels (2008) was to explore and find an improved and innovative approach to animated narrative, through re-contextualising live action found footage and Classic Hollywood film, to communicate the new film's concept: to play with audience perceptions, archetypes, film genre expectations and cinematic form in more powerful and artistic ways. At the Getty Archive, I researched clips from classic 1940’s / 50’s film noir with recognisable movie stars from 170 films, and created an archive of 3,500 still images from these. These were taken out of original contexts by physically removing the film image backgrounds, then, subverted and juxtaposed with different objects within purpose built set environments. New methods of animated collage using stop-motion allowed me to animate interactions between newly conceived situations, characters and objects to emphasise the play of scale as a significant new methodology. I used colour and developed additional in-camera methods that enhanced the emotional intensity and greatly improved the film’s new narrative. Revised work on the earlier film's segments included in-camera rain effects combined with seamless matching digital effects. This research into genre and iconography, that was restricted in the original work, allowed me to develop new ideas with the intention of encouraging the audience to emotionally engage with the final output on a deeper level. The new material explores themes and subtexts of subversion, surrealism, and genre. Combined with a new music and sound effect track, the results of this new method is intended to allow viewers to experience the new material, totalling almost half the original film's duration, in ways not achieved by the 2007 film.
