Bluestockings: Women of Reason from Enlightenment to Romanticism
The book traces women’s involvement in the central literary transformations of their time and builds upon over a decade of research. It draws upon the careful reading of a wide range of published and manuscript sources from the long eighteenth century, focusing on the genres of Shakespeare criticism, poetry and educational writing. The argument draws upon close and sustained engagement with several unpublished archives (including the Montagu correspondence at the Huntington Library in California, a collection of over 7,000 letters which addresses coal mining, female education, natural history, legal and clerical history and metropolitan literary life).
