Dr Aisha MIAH is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) in the Sarcoma Unit and Radiotherapy Research Lead for the Unit. She specialises in the treatment of soft tissue sarcomas with radiotherapy and chemotherapy. On completion of her specialist training in 2008, Dr Miah was awarded a clinical research fellowship to undertake a PhD at The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) into the application of advanced radiotherapy technologies in head and neck cancer. Following this she took up her post with the RM. She was awarded her PhD in 2012. The RM, together the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer and Dr Miah’s research falls within the scope of the BRC, working across the ICR/RM, as evidenced by her publications. Her current research interests include the assessment of functional imaging for radiotherapy planning and the combination of biological agents with radiotherapy.

Professor Christopher NUTTING is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist, at The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) in the Head and Neck Unit, Professor of Radiation Oncology with The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR), and joint Head of the ICR Division of Radiotherapy and Imaging. The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Professor Nutting is Principal Investigator for a number of research trials including the Cancer Research UK sponsored PARSPORT and COSTAR Trials, working closely with the ICR Clinical Trials and Statistics Unit (CTSU). He is co-chair of the phase III Trials and Methodology workstream of the Clinical and Translational Radiotherapy Research Working Group of the National Cancer Research Institute. Professor Nutting has supervised 6 ICR research students during the REF period.

Professor Anwar PADHANI is a Consultant Radiologist and Clinical Lead in MR Imaging with the Paul Strickland Scanner Centre, Mount Vernon Cancer Centre and Professor of Cancer Imaging with The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The ICR and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) entered into an academic partnership with Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in June 2010. The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Professor Padhani held the post of Senior Lecturer and Honorary Consultant Radiologist in the CRC Clinical Magnetic Resonance Research Group at the ICR and the RM from 1994 to 2000 and has maintained close research links since. His research interests focus on clinical imaging research with translational emphasis, including the use of innovative imaging in early stage clinical trials. In his research, he works closely with members of the Cancer Research UK/EPSRC Cancer Imaging Centre at the ICR/RM. Professor Padhani is currently a member of the supervisory team for an ICR research student.

Dr Chris PARKER is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) and Reader in Prostate Oncology within the Division of Radiotherapy & Imaging of The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Dr Parker is a BRC deputy theme lead for Prostate Cancer. He is Principal Investigator for a number of national and international prostate cancer clinical trials. In his research he works closely with colleagues across the RM and the ICR, as evidenced by his publications.

Professor Gordon RUSTIN is a Consultant Medical Oncologist with the East & North Hertfordshire NHS Trust based at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, where he is Director of Medical Oncology, and Professor of Cancer Therapy with The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The ICR and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) entered into an academic partnership with Mount Vernon Cancer Centre in June 2010. The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Professor Rustin’s research is focused in the RM/ICR with close links to the RM’s gynaecology unit. A major current project of Professor Rustin’s is as Co-Chief Investigator of the first trial combining an oral anti-angiogenesis agent (pazopanib) with a vascular disrupting agent (fosbretabulin), working in collaboration with Professor Stan Kaye, Professor Martin Gore and Dr Susanna Banerjee of the ICR/RM.

Professor Ian SMITH is a Consultant Medical Oncologist and Head of the Breast Unit with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM), and Professor of Cancer Medicine with The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR). The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Professor Smith is responsible for developing and managing the research strategy for the RM Breast Unit in line with the overall research strategy of the RM and in conjunction with the NIHR RM/ICR BRC, liaising closely with the Unit Research Lead and the BRC Breast Cancer theme lead. His own current research focuses on neoadjuvant (preoperative) therapies as a research approach towards individualised treatments for breast cancer. He has been Chief Investigator or UK Principal Investigator for several international multicentre breast cancer trials involving in particular targeted therapies and aromatase inhibitors in recent years. Professor Smith has been a member of the supervisory teams for 2 ICR research students during the REF period.

Dr Naureen STARLING is a Consultant Medical Oncologist in Gastrointestinal Cancers and Associate Director of Clinical Research with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM). In this role she works closely with the Director of Clinical Research for the RM and The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) to deliver the joint research strategy. The RM, together with the ICR as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer. Dr Starling is the BRC Training Lead and her research in gastrointestinal cancers falls mainly within the BRC Clinical Studies and Molecular Pathology themes, focusing on clinical trials of novel therapeutics and stratified medicine, as evidenced by her publications.

Dr Nicholas VAN AS is a Consultant Clinical Oncologist with The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust (RM) in the Gastrointestinal and Urology Units. The RM, together The Institute of Cancer Research (ICR) as the academic partner, is designated as the UK’s only specialist NIHR Biomedical Research Centre (BRC) for Cancer and Dr van As’ research falls within several themes. Dr van As has just completed a MD (Res) with the ICR supervised by Professor David Dearnaley. His research interests are risk prediction in early prostate cancer, functional MRI, and image-guided and hypo-fractionated radiotherapy, all focused in the RM and the ICR, as evidenced by his publications. He is the clinical lead for CyberKnife at the RM, is on the international programme committee for CyberKnife research, and is Principal Investigator for a range of clinical trials.
