Dr Charles Ferro is Consultant Nephrologist at the University Hospital Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust and Honorary Senior Clinical Lecturer in Immunity and Infection at UoB, with a specialist interest in renal medicine. His main interests lie in the aetiology and treatment of cardiovascular disease in patients with chronic liver failure. He has an NIHR post doctoral fellowship and supervises 3 clinical PhD candidates. He is chief investigator or senior co-investigator on the Birmingham Cardio-Renal Group portfolio of studies, which evaluate different interventions in patients with CKD. CRIB-II, using spironolactone in early CKD was published in the Journal of the American College of Cardiology with much interest. This has been followed up by over £5m of funding from the HTA, BHF and NIHR to further develop this work in 3 separate trials: STOP-CKD, SPIRO-CKD and BARACK D. The CRIB-DONOR study, funded by the BHF, started recruiting in April 2011 and is investigating the effects of a small reduction in renal function in live kidney donors. This study will report in 2014 and is being followed up by an international study, EARNEST, also funded by the BHF.
