Additional information

This paper is the first thorough exploration of how the concept of "sustainability" can be applied meaningfully to large-scale, water-thirsty mining in some of the world's driest areas. It arose from two EU-funded projects (INCO-CT-2005-015171; INCO-CT2006-032539) which brought together the principal experts in Peru, Bolivia and Chile. It led to the establishment of dialogue groups for water management in mining areas in Peru, which have since been used as models of best practice elsewhere. The success of this work was recognized by the award of an Honorary Doctorate to Younger in 2010 from the National University of San Agustín, Peru.
