English abstract

Part of the new International Palestrina Edition these two volumes of triple-choir music include facsimiles of all surviving sources, a semi-diplomatic and a modern edition. There is a substantial introductory essay, notes on the sources and a critical commentary. The introduction discusses authenticity, style and performance practice and the music’s context as part of Rome's burgeoning polychoral activity in the wake of the Council of Trent. It is the first edition of this music to be based on all surviving sources (including one newly identified during its preparation) and in accordance with rigorous modern editorial standards.
