The main contribution of this paper is the novel development of a robust image watermarking algorithm using the non-redundant Contourlet transform. The research exploited the special properties of Contourlet because of its high degree of directionality and anisotropy to obtain a sparser image representation. This resulted in increasing watermark robustness against different non-geometrical (e.g. compression) and geometrical attacks (e.g. shifting). Comparisons with two wavelet methods on watermark robustness further demonstrated the better performance of this transform for digital watermarking applications.
