Additional information

The paper presents a development of a novel, entirely Eulerian, approach to the description of turbulent two-phase flows with vaporisation; this approach is currently the only one allowing a description of liquid atomisation from the first principles. This paper’s significance is that it proves that the small-scale turbulence, often neglected in theory, is the rate-limiting process and without it it is impossible to predict pressure effects on vaporisation. As a follow-up work, a CASE studentship (0900250X, co-funded by Siemens Ind. Turbomachinery, jonathan.may@siemens.com ) was awarded in 2010 for incorporation of this model into the design process for their combustion chambers.
