This paper developed the missing knowledge link between fundamental mechanisms and engineering application. It is the first study which discusses the impact of lubricant additives on Diamond-Like Carbon (DLC) coatings durability, by testing them in conditions relevant to real engine systems. Methods developed are now adopted by other authors (DOI:10.1016/j.tsf.2009.09.110; DOI:10.1016/j.surfcoat.2011.11.031;DOI:10.1016/j.surfcoat.2010.07.012). - Internationally recognised (this work led to Morina being invited 2009 STLE/expert panel and keynote presentation/2009 World Tribology Congress). This research led to follow-on funding: EC/NMP/2020Interface and two PhD projects (Infineum/£81k/Emmanuel.Laine@Infineum.com; Afton/£85k/Alisdair.Brown@AftonChemical.com). The PhD candidate (Haque/tabassumul.haque@exxonmobil.com) successfully graduated and is now employed in ExxonMobil, USA.
