Additional information

This demonstrates the exciting potential for a new multi-parameter nanoparticle tumour biomarker for x-ray imaging. Gold nanoparticles had recently been approved for clinical studies and considerable effort worldwide is focusing on their use to differentiate tumour cell properties for diagnostic purposes. Nanoparticles can be functionalised to locate according to cell type and property. All imaging work up to this point to map the nanoparticle distributions had involved optical imaging of very thin tissue sections. We successfully demonstrate a novel x-ray method capable of mapping the nanoparticle distributions in 3D bulk tissue volumes for the first time.
