Double-weighted statement

Study took five years of full-time work (2007-11), but growing from and using research commenced in the earlier 1990s. Contains discoveries--archival documents (Paris); significant operas/productions never assessed before (Paris); relations between Opéra and the press; reforms before Gluck's arrival; the nature of Rousseau's contribution. Is the first holistic approach to the period (literary sources; reception; performance/structural issues), appropriately integrating others' research (Anglophone, French, German), often unpublished (dissertations). Proposes new evolutionary model for understanding operas. Reviewed favourably in TLS, issue 5758 (9 Aug. 2013), p. 7. Proposed by Cambridge U. P. for the Kinkeldey Award of the American Musicological Society.
