Additional information

Bill Niven, in addition to editing this volume, contributed an introduction and two chapters: one on the role of the "Wilhelm Gustloff" as a voting ship for Germans living in Britain in April 1938, and one on the development, findings and collapse of a government-sponsored West German research project exploring the flight of Germans over the Baltic in 1944-1945, part of whose remit was an investigation into the sinking of the ship in January 1945. In total, Niven's contribution was about 25,000 words. The book was the result of a British Academy-funded project with international participation.
