This paper presents the first fully unsteady model of volcanic plumes. Early attempts to implement the model are currently under way internationally (Volcanic Risk Solutions, Institute of Natural Resources, New Zealand: g.lube@massey.ac.nz; Icelandic Meteorological Office – Halldór Björnsson: halldor@vedur.is). Follow-on funding to support field measurements has been awarded by the Royal Society (RG120572 – Ryan Ahmed: researchgrants@royalsociety.org).
