Additional information

The study reported in this paper is a combination of theoretical work to formulate a one-dimensional (1D) theory of CSF pulse propagation in the spinal cavity, and a finite element fluid-structure modelling used to validate the theoretical model. The theoretical work introduces new techniques for treating the problems of wave propagation in fluid-filled elastic conduits. The 1D theory developed was implemented numerically to investigate the CSF dynamics in the presence of a fluid-filled cyst. This is one of two existing 1D models of the spine and is distinct in treating all of the structures as deformable.
