Additional information

This paper describes the numerical analysis used to model the experimental behaviour of impacted, axially compressed, steel tubes presented in previous work by the authors. A non-linear, time domain, dynamic approach has been used for the very successful simulation. The numerical models are unique because, in addition to capturing the dynamic instability, they have also modelled impact rebounds correctly. This work is paramount in determining the full non-linear behaviour of axially loaded steel offshore platform legs subject to dynamic lateral impacts from supply vessels and also capturing the behaviour of steel oil risers tubes damaged during installation.
