Additional information

The first ever demonstration of gyroscopic motion of the vortex outside the point contact area of spinvalves, such technology could potentially replace many RC circuit based RF oscillators in telecommunications equipment eg cell-phones. The research was part of EU FP6 project (IST-16939-STREP), with ST Microelectronics (Grenoble), Universite Paris Sud, IMEC (Belgium) and University of Sheffield and is now pursued by international groups like HGST USA, CNRS groups under Prof Fert and AIST Tsukuba Japan and NIST USA: michael.donahue@nist.gov. It stimulated invited talks at Intermag Madrid 2008, APS Pittsburg 2009, and funding for a Royal Society University Research fellowship 430K GBP.
