Double-weighted statement

We put forward this monograph for double-weighting on the grounds that (a) it is based on the use of primary sources which were especially extensive and difficult to access, in that it draws on several newly released archives and other papers inside and outside China; (b) it presents critical insights concerning the maritime outlook and trade of China over several centuries, that were derived from a lengthy period of data collection; (c) it generates a particularly complex thesis, challenging the dominant paradigm in the study of China and exposing the role of the maritime world in shaping modern China.
