Additional information

<23>Prior to this paper, it was not clear that sieves (a morphological image transform) were related to interest-point operators (such as Maximally Stable Extremal Regions, MSERs). We show that MSERs are a subset of sieves, and that there is potential for improving the robustness of MSERS (which are already regarded as very robust) by processing not just maxima or minima, but the two sets simultaneously. The work has found exploitation in a new object detection system developed for the Department of Homeland Security Segmentation Challenge.
