Generic protease detection technology for monitoring periodontal disease.
Generic protease detection technology developed previously has been shown to be capable of detecting three markers of periodontal inflammation. For the first time, we have shown that detection can be carried out by impedance measurements, which will allow fabrication of cheap disposable sensors for the dental market. Together with manufacturers, we have developed a prototype sensor array and meter and are currently trying to attract further investment in our spin-out company Degrasense. Resulting from this work, we have secured a two-year grant from the Barts and the London Charity (£220k) to develop this technology for inflammation monitoring in multiple sclerosis.
