Additional information

First paper to experimentally demonstrate the generation and transmission of polarization-switched QPSK signals, achieving record transmission distances. Hugely significant in showing the power of optimising the modulation format and the post-coherent receiver DSP and the resultant increases in achievable transmission distances, together with using a lower symbol rate format to increase capacity, yet potentially simplify receiver design, making it more cost-effective. The extension of this research to WDM transmission formed the basis of prize-winning ECOC'2011 paper 'Ultra-long-haul transmission of 7×42.9-Gbit/s PS-QPSK and PM-BPSK'. Research supported by Huawei and formed basis of EU project ASTRON (www.ict-astron.eu; €3.2M; PI at UCL: Bayvel).
