Flicker mitigation strategy for a doubly fed induction generator by torque control
Doubly fed induction generator (DFIG) is a popular type of wind turbine. While cheaper than a permanent magnet generator, the stator is directly connected to the grid without a full-rated power electronic buffering power fluctuation. This paper resulting from collaboration with colleagues in Denmark and China proposes a new generator torque control (GTC) strategy for flicker mitigation, with a simple, practical control scheme presented for variable speed wind turbines with MW-level DFIG. The method can effectively mitigate power fluctuation and flicker, promoting large scale wind power applications by satisfying power quality requirements without extra cost to turbine manufacturers and operators.
