Additional information

A method of calculating the important, yet often unknown, cross-link density in medical-grade silicone elastomers is presented based on swelling measurements and modified Flory-Huggins solution theory. This is very useful for analysing properties in commercially-sensitive medical-grade formulations where details of elastomer components or cross-linking are not available. This work led to a further project with a plastic surgeon (Yezen Sheena, Farnham Royal Hospital) on mechanical properties of medical silicones for breast implants.
