Diffraction and fringing field effects in small pixel liquid crystal devices with homeotropic alignment
Using our comprehensive and accurate LC modelling techniques this paper shows limitations in the current pixel-based liquid crystal on silicon (LCOS) device designs caused by the LC elasticity and defects, ultimately limiting the achievable resolution with the current design strategy. Improvements in this field are essential to match the CMOS high resolution and to realise the full potential of LCOS in holographic interconnects, diffractive, 3D and Head-up displays. This work is extended in our current collaborative work with Cambridge Univ. (Prof. D.P. Chu) aimed at designing radically new, optimal LCOS configurations for phase-only operation, instead of the current pixel-based devices.
