Additional information

Vibration problems abound in rotating machinery such as gas turbines. This work used an efficient parametric method to optimise the design of a novel damping device able to sit inside hollow structures such as blade cores. The work was funded by Rolls-Royce, and has lead to two joint patent applications with Rolls-Royce. As a result Rolls-Royce has funded further projects with Prof Smith worth over £100k (Ramesh.Rajasekaran@Rolls-Royce.com). It underpinned the award of the EU Interreg project 'Materials for Energy Efficiency in Transport' (£233k).
