The effect of emergent features on judgments of quantity in configural and separable displays
<20>This paper reports the first empircal evaluation of 'kiviat' charts, employed by the UK Government to publish police authority performance data over several years. The importance of this study lies in its demonstration that emergent properties of statistical graphics significantly distort people's judgements, and that (contrary to previous findings) kiviat charts lead to worse performance compared to other graphs. The research resulted in a set of guidlines for interface designers to reduce the detrimental effect of emergent features.
