Additional information
This paper resolved the debate about the likely calcium sensor used in cochlear hair cells to control neurotransmitter release. It is the first report of synaptotagmins, a major group of synaptic regulators, in the cochlea and shows that their expression is developmentally sensitive. It led to further collaboration with the group at Sheffield (Furness et al, 2013; PNAS, 110, 13898; Zampini et al, PLosBiol,:e1001048) that are changing perceptions of how cochlear hair cells function. It was partially supported by the Henry Smith Charity and also brought income into Keele from Sheffield.
