This study reports for the first time on an organised 3D peripheral nerve in vitro model. No such models presently exist, supporting the Reduction, Refinement and Replacement (3Rs) of animals in scientific research. Downstream applications will be considerable, now permitting research into disease, development, toxicity and drug screening studies on nerve as an alternative to using animal studies.
